My Teaching Philosophy
As a teacher, I have been privileged to both do what I love and teach what I love. This contributes not only to my joy of teaching, but also to my effectiveness as a teacher. I believe that by exuding my enthusiasm for teaching and my passion for the subject, students become equally invested and engaged in the material.
I view teaching as a collaborative experience, involving a bidirectional exchange of thoughts and information between teacher and students. Throughout each class and over the course of the semester, I ask for and encourage my students to provide feedback regarding course material and structure. I use this feedback to tailor my instruction to the needs of the class, as well as to the needs of individual students. I want my students to feel comfortable asking for help and expressing concerns and I believe strongly in making myself approachable and available both in and out of the classroom.
I make every effort to promote a positive, interactive learning environment in which students are interested and engaged. I accomplish this through my upbeat energy and enthusiasm for the material, as well as through the use of interactive lessons and multiple forms of instruction. My goal is that in addition to developing a thorough understanding of the course topics, my students will learn to think critically and expand their worldviews. Accordingly, discussion is an important part of class. I work hard to create a supportive and welcoming environment in which students feel comfortable to express their thoughts, feelings, and opinions. At the same time, I push students to think critically and open their minds to experiences and perspectives beyond their own. By doing this, my hope is that the knowledge and insights they gain follow them long after they leave my class.
